Footballers and Music

Soccer and song are an unlikely pairing, but before you scoff at it, let us explore it a bit more when we say music, we are not only talking about the football player singing or attempting to sing.

Surely footballers listen to music right, so have you ever wondered what’s jamming in Neymar’s car when he drives to training or what playlist Ronaldo has on at home when cooking dinner. You know, the same way you listen to music while cleaning or trying to place a bet on football in Zambia or wherever you are on the continent.

Footballers turned musician

Some footballers turned into musicians, or perhaps they were musicians who chose to play football well. Either way, we appreciate both their talents. Maybe they would be such great players without the music, and we wouldn’t be able to bet on premier league at 10bet.

Julio Iglesias

Surprising; who would have thought that the Spanish crooner of Amor, Amor, Amor was once a professional football player? Julio is one of the most successful singers globally, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide in 14 languages.

In 2013 he was inducted in the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame and had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1989 UNICEF named him Special Ambassador for the Performing Arts.

Yet, he was not always a performing artist; while studying law at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, he played football for the University. He later joined Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda Division. His career came to an end when he was involved in a car accident that left him unable to walk for two years. He was given a guitar to assist the physical recovery of his hands, and that’s where he discovered his musical talent. And the rest we all know.

Alexi Lalas

Alexi is an American player who was a defender for LA Galaxy Club, where he won the CONCACAF Champions Cup and MLS Cup with the team in 2002. He was the first American footballer to play in Serie A with Padova.

He represented his country in the 1994 and 1998 world cup; he was also part of the 1992 Olympics team. He retired in 2004 and currently works for Fox News as an analyst.

His genre of music is rock, and he was a member of the band called The Gypsies, which opened for Hootie and The Blowfish on the 1998 European tour. The Gypsies only released one album, but he has released seven solo albums from 1996 until 2019.

Daniel Sturridge

Daniel plays for Perth Glory as a striker; he has played in the Premier League for Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. He represented England for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 Summer Olympics.

He has always loved Hip Hop and has been photographed with some Hip Hop artists such as Drake. He launched a record label, Dudley Road Records, in 2017 and signed several artists to his label like The Wave and Anderson 1000. This is not the first time he has had a record label; during his time at Chelsea, he established a record label with his father, but that did not go very well.

We hope his label and signed artists have a resounding success this time around.

What’s on the Playlist

Not every football player has musical talent or can start up a record label, but there is one thing they all do to listen to music.

We take a peek at some of the most famous players’ playlists.

Neymar has a playlist on Spotify called Neymar Jr Hits; he loves Brazilian music so much that he has even appeared on Gusttavo Lima’s performance. He also has Rihanna, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber on the playlist. The playlist has 30 songs in total, and the player claims he listens to it before each match he plays in.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a romantic at heart if one judges his favorite artists, Phil Collins, George Michael and Alicia Keys. But for match days, he likes the DJs such as Swedish House Mafia and Eric Prydz. On the Nike training playlist, CR7 did with Nike; he included Rihanna, Sade and Romeo Santos. His musical palette is quite varied.

Lionel Messi enjoys listening to cumbia; this is a genre of music from Colombia and Panama. His favorite singer Sergio Torres even wrote a song for Messi titled ‘The Eighth Wonder’.

Music is a universal language; no matter who you are or what you do for a living, some songs or artists speak to us as no one else can. Music can motivate us, cheer us up and make the gloomiest days better. It’s no wonder even the famous and super talented have favorite songs and musicians.
